Dear Friends and Family,
We have now had our water rationed for the past month. According to one article I found, there was a
break in a major pipe that causes less water to be supplied to various parts of
the city. So we only have water 3 times a day for about 2 hours or less, however
during the weekend we have only had water one or two times and then for only an
hour. We heard several reasons for the
cause of the problems but we finally found out that most of the torres or high
rise condos have submerged wells and have no problems. So it looks like the owners are going to get
that done within the next two weeks. It only takes 72 hours to drill a well and
begin functioning. However the main
problem has been that the lady that runs the condo association doesn’t do
anything. No one can get in contact with her, no accounting is given of the
funds, no information or reports are given to the owners, and no one has
questioned her or tried to do anything about it. There is also a lot of deferred
maintenance. Brother Y being Brother Y after talking to our owner and the owner
upstairs is going to get the problem resolved by representing our owner who
gave his grateful permission. He and the owner upstairs are going to draft a
letter, send it to all the people who live here announcing a meeting. Evidently, here, the renters also can vote.
So with 51 per cent of the votes they can turn the management over to a
professional management association and also demand an accounting of the funds.
This should be interesting and a big surprise to that lady who has been getting
away with unending dishonesty including telling the security person (who is
involved in her schemes) to turn on the pump for a few minutes so she could
take a shower when no one else had that privilege during the time the pump was
shut off.
On Saturday and Sunday, we watched conference at the
Quisquaya chapel. Several of the members came for all four sessions however on
Saturday, we were in competition with a LOUD political activity that went on
the whole time a few feet from the chapel.
Nati and Bishop Garcia came to visit us arriving Sunday
afternoon. It was a wonderful reunion
seeing them as they entered the waiting area.
After going to the temple Tuesday morning Brother and Sister Reynaldo
Reyes came to pick them up and will show them all around for the next few
days. They will come back Saturday to
say good-bye. That will be hard for me. L Brother Reyes was a missionary in Escondido
several years ago. Unfortunately, when
Nati and the Bishop were with us, the water situation became worse and then our
refrigerator began to breakdown and wasn’t cooling the food. Nati was going to show me some of her tips
and tricks with cooking but with the water situation it was just too hard. We
did go to visit a beach in La Romana about two hours away and eat at a nice
outdoor seaside restaurant and swim in the Caribbean on Monday. We also visited
with the Relief Society president in Quisquaya that was on the way to Romana to
drop off some clothes Nati brought to give to some of the needy members. It was a nice visit and a good spiritual
feeling among all. This faithful sister is a widow, her two daughters who live
with her are widows and there are 4 grandchildren living there in a shack put together
with pieces of wood and sheets of metal, no running water, and no
refrigerator. When heavy rains come, the
streets flood. About a foot of water
flows through the house. With the help
of Brother Reyes and Carlos’ organization skills we may find some solutions to
help her and her family better their living situation.
Seeing how our friends in Quisqueya live, our problems are
minor and it looks like we will have our water situation fixed soon and a new
refrigerator on Saturday. The owner of
our condo is so sweet. She invited us to dinner at her place Tuesday evening
after coming over to check out the situation with the refrigerator. We are blessed to have such nice people to
rent from.
Carlos and I are enjoying this week off to relax and
replenish our energies to begin work again in the archives on Monday. We have
perfected our skills and are now taking 8000 to 10,000 digital images a week
and they are all passing the audit.

amigos y familia,
Hace un mes
ahora el agua ha sido racionada. Según
un artículo que encontré, hay averías en los sistemas del acueducto o sea una
fuga de agua en una de las tuberías de 67 pulgadas. Así que solo tenemos agua 2
o 3 veces al día y solamente por una o dos horas. Los sábados y los domingos es
peor, menos agua menos tiempo. Hemos oído varias historias sobre la causa pero
parece que esta torre como las otras torres de condominios no tiene un poso
sumergible. Hemos aprendido finalmente
que hay planes de construir un poso y se puede hacerlo en 72 horas. Así que si todo sale bien deberíamos tener
agua sin problemas en dos semanas. Sin
embargo, el problema principal es que la gerente responsable por la asociación de
los condominios no ha hecho nada. Un
propietario que vive arriba de nosotros nos dijoque nunca puede comunicarse con
ella. No contesta el teléfono ni correos electrónicos ni nada. No ha sido una contabilidad
de los fondos, no hay reportes para los dueños, y además nadie le ha preguntado
nada. También hay mucho mantenimiento deferido.
Hermano Y, siendo Hermano Y después de hablar con el propietario que
vive arriba de nosotros se va a resolver el problema y tiene permiso de los
propietarios de nuestro condo con mucho agradecimiento que los represente. Carlos
y el dueño que vive arriba de nosotros van a escribir una carta y mandársela a
todos que viven aquí anunciando una reunión. Evidentemente los que aquilan los
condos también pueden votar. Así que con 51 por ciento de los votos la
asociación puede entregar la gestión de la asociación a una empresa profesional
y también exigir una contabilidad de los fondos. Debe ser interesante y una
sorpresa grande para la señora que ha sido haciendo muchos engaños y saliéndose
con la suya incluyendo diciendo a la persona de seguridad (un socio de ella en
este asunto) que prenda la bomba un poco tiempo para que ella pudiera bañarse
cuando nadie más tuvo ese privilegio durante el tiempo cuando está pagada.
En sábado y
domingo miramos la conferencia general en la capilla de Quisqueya. Varios miembros vinieron para ver de los
cuatro sesiones sin embargo en sábado estábamos en competencia con una
actividad política extremamente muy RUIDOSA que duró durante de toda la
conferencia a pocos metros de la capilla.
Nati y el
Obispo Garcia vinieron a visitarnos llegando el domingo de la tarde. Fue una
reunión emotiva viéndoles como entraron
al salón de espera. Después de asistir
al templo el martes de la mañana, Hermano y Hermana Reynaldo Reyes vinieron
para llevarles a su casa y luego enseñarles algunas partes de la isla durante
los días siguientes. Van a regresar el sábado
para despedirnos. Será muy emotiva para mí. LHermano Reyes fue misionero en
Escondido hace varios años.
Desafortunadamente, cuando Nati y el Obispo fueron con nosotros la
situación del agua empezó a ser peor y además nuestro refrigerador empezó a
dejar de funcionar. No estaba enfriando bien la comida. Nati iba a enseñarme algunas
sugerencias y trucos para cocinar pero con el asunto del agua era demasiado
difícil. Sin embargo fuimos a visitar a las playas de La Romana acerca de dos
horas de distancia y comimos en un restaurante bonito afuera a la orilla del
mar de Caribe y nadamos en el mar el lunes.
También en camino a La Romano paramos en Quisqueya para visitar a la
presidenta de la Sociedad de Socorro para dejar ropa que trajo Nati para
algunos miembros necesitados. Era una
visita muy agradable con un sentimiento espiritual entre nosotros. Esta hermana muy fiel es una viuda y también
sus hijas que viven con ella son viudas y hay 4 nietos que viven allí en una
pequeña choza hecha de pedazos de madera y metal. No hay agua corriente, ni refrigerador. Cuando llueve fuerte durante la temporada de
lluvias, las calles se inundan y casi un pie de agua fluye por su casita. Con la ayuda de Hermano Reyes y los
habilidades de organización que tiene Hermano Y, podemos encontrar una solución
para ayudarle y a su familia mejorar su calidad de vida.
Viendo cómo
nuestros amigos de Quisqueya viven, nuestros problemas son pocos y parece que
nuestra situación de agua se va a ser arreglada muy pronto y tendremos un
refrigerador nuevo el sábado. La dueña
de nuestro condo es muy dulce. Nos invitó a su casa para cenar el martes
después de venir para resolver la situación del refrigerador. Somos muy bendecidos de tener gente tan
agradable que son los propietarios de nuestro condo.
Carlos y yo
estamos gozando de esta semana de descanso para relajar y recuperar nuestras
energías para empezar de nuevo a trabajar (en español dominicano se dicen “vamos
a mambo”, ji ji ji) en los archivos el lunes. Hemos perfeccionadas nuestras
habilidades y ahora estamos sacando 8000 a 10,000 imágenes digitales cada
semana y todos están aprobando la auditoría.
